Hyderabad, June 3 (NSS): The State president of Republican Party of India, Mr Bojja Tharakam, has requested the Union Minister for Law and Justice, Mr Veerappa Moily, to get the list forwarded by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in the matter of appointment of judges, thoroughly inquired into and see to it that there was equal representation to all sections of the society which have so far no representation in the High Court.

In a letter to the Union Minister for Law and Justice, Mr Bojja Tharakam pointed out that the list sent by the Collegium of the AP High Court does not contain names of either women or Scheduled Tribes. He urged Mr Moily not to approve such a controversial list and forward it to the President for her assent.

The RPI leader has stated that it was widely published in the newspapers that the High Court has recommended names of 14 advocates to the Supreme Court for consideration of appointment as judges to the High Court. The recommendation received wide opposition and resentment from several quarters, he added.

Contending that the list was steeped in controversies, he stated that there were allegations of corruption against some and involvement in criminal cases against others. Some are said to be the family members of a former judge of the Supreme Court and High Court. The allegation against others was that they are either close relatives or friends of sitting judges and politicians who wield enormous influence in Andhra Pradesh, he stated, adding that the list was hit by allegations of nepotism and favourtism.

Besides, another serious allegation was that out of 14 names, nine belonged to the Upper castes — four Brahmins, three Reddys, one Kamma and one Velama. Out of the remaining five, two are minorities — one Muslim and another Christian and only two are SCs. Competent advocates from women and STs are left out in the list which does not reflect the diversity one of the components of democracy, he bemoaned.

Mr Bojja Tharakam also sent copies of his letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi. (NSS)
