Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran of DMK has tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister today. The CBI, India’s premier investigating agency has charged Maran of indulging in irregularities in the multi-million dollar 2-G Spectrum scam in which former Telecom Minister A Raja DMK supremo Karunanidhi’s daughter and MP Kanimozhi are already in jail.
Maran is the next victim in the scam.
The DMK minister was under pressure to quit after CBI accused him of coercing Chennai-based telecom company Aircel promotor to sell his stake to a Malaysian company in 2006. Dayanidhi’s ex telecom secretary Nripendra Mishra has revealed to the CBI that Maran forced Aircel to help his brother’s company Sun TV.
The CBI in its report about the 2G scam told the Supreme Court that during 2004-07 when Maran was telecom Minister, Chennai -based telecom promoter Sivasankaran was forced to sell the stake in Aircel to a Malaysian firm Maxis owned by Ananda Krishna.
The CBI also said that there did seem to be “an element of coercion” in the manner in which Aircel was sold to Ananda Krishnan. The UPA government was under immense pressure to remove Dayanidhi Maran and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was called a non-performing head of office and a silent spectator to corruption. The Opposition leaders echoed that the former telecom minister was one of the key persons responsible for the multi-million 2G scam.
