Hyderabad, July 13 (NSS): Andhra Pradesh is literally sitting on powder keg these days with both the separatists and integrationists stepping up their agitations for separate Telangana and Samaikyandhra respectively, thanks to the vacillating and dithering attitude of the Central leadership in taking a firm decision either way.

The politicians as well as students from both the regions seem to be vying with each other to hog the lime light with their respective agitations in pursuance of their demands. In a bid to mount pressure on the Central leadership, over 100 elected representatives of the people, including ministers, MPs and legislators from the Telangana region submitted resignations during the first week of this month. As if not to lag behind, the TRS-dominated Telangana Political JAC organized a two-day bandh forcing normal life in the region to go hay wire.

The Telangana students, under the aegis of OU Students JAC, launched a mass indefinite hunger strike at the Arts College on the OU Campus, which once again turned into a hotbed of students’ violence. The students’ hunger strike in which a number of girl students too have joined entered the third day on Wednesday. Despite the health of some deteriorated, the students refused to call off their fasting even braving the incessant rains. The students declared that their fast-unto-death would come to an end only after a separate Telangana State was carved out.

Even as the bus yatra by the Telugu Desam legislators of the region, who had resigned from their elective posts, continued their tour in the Telangana districts, the Congress leaders from the region commenced a 48-hour fast at Indra Park on Wednesday. As many as 10 ministers, seven MPs, 14 MLAs and three MLCs were among those who began the 48-hour fast.

The OU Students JAC ridiculed the fast by the Congress leaders and also the bus yatra by the TDP leaders and demanded that all those who had resigned should join the students on July 15 to lay siege to the State Assembly and pressurize the Speaker to accept their resignations.

In view of the students plan to lay siege to the State Assembly and keeping view the past experience, the police have made elaborate security arrangements in and around the legislature.

Meanwhile, the agitation for Samaikyandhra gained momentum in all the districts in the region. The students have been boycotting classes and taking out rallies demanding status quo of the State. The Samaikyandhra JAC and also the students JAC were putting pressure on the ministers and legislators to resign by July 15 lest they would have to face serious consequences.

The students of SV University have also commenced today Vanta Varpu programme while the leaders of the JAC sat on a dharna in Vizag.

A delegation of ministers and legislators are also planning to go to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and the AICC president to impress upon the need for maintaining a unified State.

While the agitations by the separatists and integrationists are steadily taking a serious turn, the confusing and contradictory statements by the Central leaders on the contentious issue seem to be only adding fuel to the fire. (NSS)
