CENTRE URGED NOT TO MOVE PROPOSED TRIBAL VARSITY FROM BHADRACHALAM

Hyderabad, July 19 (NSS): The noted educationist and MLC, Mr Chukka Ramaiah, has appealed to the Union government not to move the proposed Tribal University from Bhadrachalam of Khammam district to Visakhapatnam district because the AICC president, Ms Sonia Gandhi, had promised establish the same at Bhadrachalam.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr Ramaiah said the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Ms D. Purandeshwari, was trying to move the Tribal University from the thickest tribal-populated Bhadrachalam to her constituency in Visakhapatnam district. Under the present volatile political situation in the State, move to change the location of proposed Tribal University would add fuel to the ongoing Telangana movement. He urged Ms Purandeshwari to drop her idea as already Bhadrachalam remained neglected since several decades. He also alleged that the HRD Minister was trying to hijack the tribal university on pretext of presence of Maoists in Khammam district.

Mr Ramaiah said Khammam district has the highest tribal population in the State. The district has about 6.82 lakh population. According to 2001 Censes, about 18.8 lakh tribals were in the Coastal Andhra region, 27.49 lakhs in Telangana and 3.86 lakhs in the Rayalaseema Region, he said, adding that Khammam district has more tribal population and less per cent of State tribal literacy rate.

Mr Ramaiah said the Centre could set up another Tribal University in Visakhapatnam district if needed, but the proposed University should not be shifted from Bhadrachalam. He also said the tribal literacy would improve in the region if the University was set up in the region.

Another MLC, Mr K. Dilip Kumar, demanded that the Human Resource Development Ministry shelve its proposal to move the proposed University from Bhadrachalam to Visakhapatnam district. He alleged that the HRD Ministry was neglecting Swamy Ramananda Theertha Rural Development University in Bhoodan Pochampally of Nalgonda district by allotting scarce funds. He said Ms Purandeswari’s idea of shifting the proposed tribal university from Bhadrachalam to Visakhapatnam would exacerbate the injured feelings of the Telangana people. He also threatened to launch agitation if the Union government failed to concede their demand and establish the university in Bhadrachalam as originally planned and promised by the Congress supremo, Ms Sonia Gandhi.

The Osmania University Telangana Teachers’ Forum convener, Prof. Lakhman, the Telangana-Andhra Praja Sanghala JAC president, Mr Bellaiah Naik, the Ramaiah Vidya Peetam president, Mr Juluri Gowrishankar, the Osmania University Student JAC leader, Mr Rakesh, were also present. (NSS)
