Hyderabad, Aug. 17 (NSS): The Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, today requested the Government of India to advise the Oil Companies to allot eight lakh LPG connections to Andhra Pradesh per year for distribution under Deepam scheme in the next three years so as to cover maximum number of BPL families with LPG connections.

In a letter to the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr S Jaipal Reddy, the Chief Minister stated that the State government proposes to cover maximum number of BPL families with LPG connections by paying the deposit for Cylinder and Regulator with a view to protect the women from health hazards.

“I would like to bring to your notice that with a view to provide relief to the women from the drudgery of cooking with firewood, protecting them from health hazard, preventing the felling of trees and to protect the environment from pollution, the State government has been providing LP Gas connections under Deepam scheme to the BPL families viz. Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Annapurna, Self Help Groups like DWCRA, DWCUA, Thrift Groups, Vanasamrakshna Samithis and so on by paying security deposit for Cylinder and Regulator to the Oil Companies, on behalf of the beneficiary. We have allotted 37.36 lakh Deepam connections to the beneficiaries so far since 1999.  The Oil Companies in the State have assured to provide a minimum of three lakh Deepam connections during the current year,” the Chief Minister has stated.

Mr Reddy stated there were some 200 lakh families out of whom 147 lakh families (both general and Deepam beneficiaries) are having LP Gas connections.  These uncovered families mostly belong to the BPL families who would not have taken the connections due to their inability to pay the deposit towards cylinder and the regulator to the Oil Companies, added.
