STRIKES IN GENCO BANNED; STATE INVOKES ESMA

Hyderabad, July 18 (NSS): The State government on Monday issued a GO prohibiting strikes in all
services under the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited under the provisions of
Andhra Pradesh Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1971 (A.P. Act 20 of 1971) for six months.

According to the GO issued by Mr Suthirtha Bhattacharya, Principal Secretary to Government,
the State government has declared any service in Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation
Limited as an essential service under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Essential Services
Maintenance Act, 1971, (A.P. Act No.20 of 1971). The government has felt necessary and expedient to
prohibit strikes in public interest, in any services in Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation
Limited for six months. Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (3) of
section 3 of the Andhra Pradesh Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1971 (A.P. Act 20 of 1971), the
State government has prohibited strikes in all the services under the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation
Corporation Limited for six months from July 21.
The GO has significance in the light of Telangana JAC’s decision to go on general strike from
August first week. (NSS)
